Interment, patio fees set for significant increase in Kawartha Lakes

As with most things in these inflationary times, Kawartha Lakes businesses and residents will be getting squeezed a bit more when it comes to city fees on everything from burying a loved one, to offering a licensed patio or even owning a cat.

City of Kawartha Lakes council — save two councillors — voted in favour of passing the consolidated fees bylaw at the December meeting, bringing with it a general increase of three per cent alongside steeper cost increases and new fees in other city-provided service areas.

A primary area of concern for several councillors was the jump in a wide variety of burial costs. Double depth burial for example went from $875 to $1,200 and other routine burial fees were hiked from $863 to $1,000.
